Data

In this section, we present an overview of the number of participants and their composition across all waves of CILS4EU and CILS4EU-DE. For waves 1-3, the information is presented for each of the three participating countries separately. Since harmonized data collection ended after three waves, information from wave 4 onwards refers to the German continuation of the CILS4EU study, CILS4EU-DE.

CILS4EU (2010-2013)

Wave 1

The table below contains information on the wave 1 participants of the CILS4EU study in absolute numbers on the school, classroom, and student level respectively. It also includes information on the number of parental and teacher interviews that were conducted during the first wave of the study.

 Wave 2

This table gives an overview of the absolute number of student panelists who participated in the second wave. If it was possible, we interviewed the students in the school context again. This was the case for all respondents in the Swedish case and for most respondents from England and the Netherlands.

Students that could not be interviewed in school were followed-up with individually and interviewed via phone, post, or web. The number of these "outside" of school interviews can be found in column 2.

This group is very large in the German context due to some specificities of the German educational system: schools of the lower secondary track usually do not offer a 10th grade.

Wave 3

The table below contains the number of children who participated in wave 3 by country and mode of participation. In Sweden, participation was only possible via a web questionnaire. In the other three countries, postal questionnaires were sent out and telephone interviews were conducted in addition to the web survey.

CILS4EU-DE (2014-ongoing)

Waves 4-8 and Covid-19 Supplementary Survey

This table gives an overview of the number of participants for waves 4 to 9 and the Covid-19 supplementary survey of the German follow-up study CILS4EU-DE. Within this project, we continued the survey of original participants of the German CILS4EU subsample at regular intervals. In wave 6 of the CILS4EU-DE data collection, we additionally drew a refreshment sample in order to increase the remaining sample size. More information about the design of the follow-up study can be found here.

In this second table, we list the number of participants in each wave by separately by generational status. The 2nd and 3rd generation include the interethnic 2nd and 3rd generation. For more information about how the generational status variable is constructed in the CILS4EU data, see this working paper by Dollmann, Jacob & Kalter (2014).

For the overview table below, information about the generational status was taken from Wave 6 for the refreshment sample. For the panel sample, information about generational status was taken from Wave 1. If that was missing, information from Wave 2 or 3 was used instead.
